Pollution is not necessarily an obvious event. More often than not it occurs because of poor instruction, or ignorance between cause and effect. Many businesses carry on their daily lives assuming that their production and processes do not pollute the environment. Some take minor steps to avoid obvious pollution, but fail to police the policies they have put in place.
One customer had installed oil-water separators to clean run-off water. We visited the site to discover that every Friday afternoon a maintenance man emptied the half full skimmer drums down a nearby drain, in readiness for the next working week. In fact the liquid was supposed to be emptied into a large holding tank for collection and subsequent disposal, but nobody had told him this.
On a more serious note, the last 60 years has been peppered with more newsworthy environmental catastrophes. In their own way, all could have been avoided using the benefit of hindsight. The events chronicled on this website are not comprehensive, nor conclusive. They merely indicate a steady increase towards a growing number of environmental events.
